THANKSGIVING WITH CURRY!

By. CARR, DONJUNAE

The smell of the turkey in the oven! The aroma of fresh baked buttery biscuits! The way the soft fluffy mash potatoes melt as you first apply them to your mouth! These are some of the things that my family and I do on Thanksgiving.  We also talk and laugh about the funny moments of the past and reminisce about loved ones we have lost. This holiday is about “blessing the food” and singing” Amazing Grace”. That’s a traditional Thanksgiving for my family.

All of these thoughts have caused me to wonder about how other people, especially
those new to America, celebrate the holidays. Luckily for this reporter, East’s” cultural salad” is a great place to find the answers.

Saraswati is an East High warrior who moved to the U.S. two years ago.
Saraswati kindly explained to me that the U.S. is a big change for her.  “Moving from Nepal was kind of hard because I had to leave family and friends,” she said. Despite the difficulties,  Saraswati does not regret moving to America. She explained that in her native country they do not celebrate “Thanksgiving” like we do but, but rather” Turkey Day”. This is a day is when the people of Nepal feast on chicken bread and a variety of dishes with curry.” I was definitely confused.  Growing up in Erie, I’ve never heard of curry.  “What is curry?”

She laughed and looked at me as if I were from another planet.” Curry”, she repeated, “well curry is a real spicy seasoning that most people from Nepal put on most of their foods.” Turkey Day is spent with family and relatives eating, dancing and having fun!  Saraswati said that they also tell stories about Nepal’s heroes and princesses. This reporter finds the similarities of the cultures are in terms of practices. It’s the little bits and pieces that separate the cultures, like turkey with curry.
